Ghost Hunting for Beginners: How to Plan Your First Investigation

We understand the impulse. You watch one too many episodes of Ghost Adventures, and suddenly every old building looks like a potential lockdown.

Before you grab a flashlight and start whispering into the dark, here's how we'd plan a first investigation.

Step 1: Choose a legal, safe location

Book a guided paranormal tour, obtain written permission for a private investigation, or start in a familiar location where you're authorized to be. Never trespass or enter unstable buildings.

Step 2: Research the history

Use local archives, newspapers, and historical societies. Separate documented events from legends. An old building doesn't become haunted just because someone says it is.

Step 3: Pack a simple kit

Bring a flashlight, charged phone, notebook, water, weather-appropriate clothing, and an audio recorder if you have one. Add a basic first-aid kit and a trusted companion.

Step 4: Record baseline conditions

Note the time, temperature, electrical equipment, traffic, open windows, and other people present. These details are often more useful than a mysterious beep.

Step 5: Ask clear questions

Avoid leading prompts. Leave pauses. Don't announce what a sound 'must' have been before everyone hears it.

Step 6: Review evidence later

Keep original recordings. Compare accounts independently. Look for mundane explanations before considering extraordinary ones.

Step 7: Respect the location

Don't disturb graves, damage property, harass residents, or turn someone's tragedy into a joke.

Our beginner kit

We'd start with a flashlight, recorder, notebook, and snacks. A REM Pod can wait until you know you enjoy sitting in a dark room for hours.

Our Haunt or Not verdict

Is it haunted? Duh.

Did we prove anything? Obviously, we're really good at this.

Would we go again? Probably, but we've got a long list of haunted places to go first.
