Of all the paranormal evidence we hear on Ghost Adventures, EVP is the stuff that gets us. A mysterious voice on a recording? We will listen to it seventeen times.
But first, what does EVP actually mean?
What is EVP?
Electronic voice phenomena, or EVP, refers to sounds on recordings that listeners interpret as voices not heard during the original session. The interpretation is paranormal; the recorded sound itself is a physical audio signal.
How do investigators record EVP?
Typically, they use a digital recorder, ask questions, leave pauses, and review the recording afterward. Some also record room tone before and after a session.
Why do people hear words in noise?
Auditory pareidolia is our tendency to perceive meaningful patterns, including speech, in ambiguous sound. Background conversations, radio interference, clothing noise, and recording artifacts can also resemble words.
How to run a careful EVP session
1. Choose an authorized, safe location.
2. Record a minute of baseline sound.
3. Note everyone present and nearby sources of noise.
4. Ask clear questions with pauses.
5. Save the unedited original file.
6. Let people listen without telling them what words to expect.
7. Compare interpretations before labeling the audio.
Are EVP recordings proof of ghosts?
No scientifically established method has demonstrated that EVP captures communication from deceased people. That doesn't make every recording boring; it means the cause needs investigation.
Our verdict
The creepiest EVPs are the ones that still sound strange before someone puts subtitles on them.
